Rad Event for Eco Fundraising

Last week, I was in Philly with 350 fundraisers, newsroom leaders, and philanthropic partners for the sold-out Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit — and honestly, it was rad.
I’m using that throwback on purpose. This conference felt like old-school community organizing: collaborative, mission-driven, and full of people who actually get what it takes to sustain local news.
As a former managing editor at a nonprofit newsroom, I kept thinking how much my team would’ve loved this. Back then, we were learning to fundraise while doing a hundred other things. Having a space like this — full of ideas, peers, and support — would’ve meant the world.
Let’s be real: most nonprofit newsrooms are led by incredible journalists, not business owners. And that’s OK! That’s why we need spaces like this — to help build the skills, confidence, and community that make sustainability possible.
At Press Forward, we were proud to co-host this summit because sustainability is key to local news’ future. Journalism doesn’t just need strong reporting — it needs strong systems, solid teams, and smart fundraising to back it up.
