Dear New President of the AfDB: It’s Time to Finance Our Future, Not Fossil Fuels

As we celebrate Africa Day, the African Climate Reality Project is launching a campaign calling on the incoming president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) to lead with justice, equity, and vision. Our message is simple: it’s time to finance the future, not fossil fuels.
Africa is rich in renewable energy potential. But despite the AfDB’s growing investments in renewables, fossil fuel financing persists — and most funding still comes in the form of loans. This deepens the debt burden for African countries and stalls the continent’s ability to build a clean energy future that works for its people.
Through our #DearNewPresident campaign, ACRP is calling on the AfDB’s new leadership to:
Develop and implement a fossil fuel finance exclusion policy
Strengthen and expand the work within the AfDB Civil Society Committee
Increase transparency of deals and investments
Prioritise inclusion and engagement
Actively pave a pathway for renewable energy
Strengthen community driven accountability mechanisms
Together with partners across the continent, we’re relaunching our petition demanding that the AfDB honour its public mandate for sustainable development and climate justice.
This is a pivotal moment. The decisions the AfDB makes today will shape Africa’s tomorrow. We need leadership that puts people and the planet first.
Join the call by signing the petition.

About the African Climate Reality Project:
The African Climate Reality Project (ACRP), is the Africa Branch of global organisation The Climate Reality Project, and a program of Food and Trees for Africa. The branch was founded in 2014 in South Africa, and works with climate leaders across the continent who organise local activities and days of action. ACRP also works with governments, NGOs, and scientists in Africa to create tools and resources to support a network of active citizens who mobilise communities to find solutions to climate change and call on world leaders for more ambitious action.
